Project #5 Anti-Surveillance Tool #米兔Rice Rabbit (METOO) Movement

Project Description

The "MeToo" movement was founded by Tarana Burke in 2006, speaking up the problem of sexual violence in the United States. On July 23, 2018, the feminist movement finally broke out in China when a scandel of a public figure sexual assult was exposed on social media. 356 girls came together and started the "MeToo" movement in China, and becuase the pronunciation of "MeToo" is similar to that of "米兔", which means "rice rabbit" in Chinese, they decided to call this movement "rice rabbit". Later, illustration of rice and rabbit became the symbol of this feminist movement. Below is an illustration by Anna Vignet, which includes a rice and rabbit in the image. Although the social awareness of sexual violence has raised, the movement is still not wide-spread enough. This symbol is a secret language among girls who have alike experiences, acting like a secret signal on social media when female hard to confront their experiences. I am inspired and want to create an anti-surveillance illustration for the "米兔" movement. Therefore, my audience will be female particularly in China.

Reflection

I saw images of the Moire pattern on Medium page by Nazia Fakhruddin. I think it will be a interesting way to illustrate my idea, since I want to hide the image of "rice and rabbit". Thus, I made the image and background same color, which the information will only be complete and show up with pink strips moving across the canvas. Starting my sketch, I first drew a grid and calculated shapes and gaps between them. Then I drew the shapes out with "line()" and used "for loop" and "mouseX" to create the movement of uncovering the symbol. I think the illustration now is good enough to hide and show the information, but I still need to refine it by adding more details and editting the text better for the visual effect. Impacted by me and my friends experiences, I deeply understand that female in China need to work much harder to gain courage and speak up. I am now and will be always willing to make efforts on this topic.
