Jiayue lost this object when she was little. It has a head, a body, and four rounded paws. It can sit up or lie down. Its body is brown. On its head are two round ears, two round eyes, and a round nose. Its nose is raised like a hemisphere with a black nose tip. It has a fluffy body and a dark red shirt with a yellow star on it.
According to Jiayue's description, I made my guess at a teddy bear. I drew it first on my sketch paper based on the detailed description. Then, I planned my logic of drawing it on computer in the order of background, head, face, body, and four paws. I also figured out the shapes I would be using for each parts before drawing. I drew the outline of my teddy bear out first with the combination of shapes, and later I adjusted them as a whole. For the last step, I added stroke weight and color. Finally, in order to present it as a childhood memory, I added a fun yellow background.
People usually don’t remember the exact appearance of their lost objects, and the image in their mind might be blurry with just a couple important features. Although my partner is very specific about the components, shapes, texture, and color, I still cannot be sure about the overall looking of her object. What I did was using my imagination and guessed. In respect to the interpretation, I need to write down the steps logically so I do not get confused in the process. Understanding P5's algorithm, I know the importance of putting everything in order. When the shapes got complex, I was first struggled by the calculation of their locations. I figured that I should set my orginal point and use translate() to locate different parts. Then after figuring out the locations and angles for each part, things got well, and editing stroke and color also became easier. I think the most fun part of this assignment is communication. Since we all have different ways of thinking, we can only make guesses even based on specific description. When I described my object to my partner, I think I did my best to communicate the shapes and details, but I know there might be a completely different presentation of my object created by my partner. There must be gaps between minds and words, between words and somebody else's understanding, and between understanding and its visualization. Just like designer trying to create the best product for their users, the description of what users want can be simple and straigt-forward, but the communication aways become very complex regarding to the design process.
